Onlia isn’t your typical auto insurance provider. They’re on a mission to make Canadian roads safer, which is why they created a new mobile app called, Onlia Sense. It’s a fun and engaging app that uses analytics to help develop safe driving techniques and encourage safer driving behaviour on the road. The app is available for free to all Canadians (download links below!) in an effort to make our roads and communities safer.
How it works
Each time you drive, the app analyzes your driving habits and scores you on factors like:
- The app also shows you any instances of distracted driving
Based on these certain driving behaviours you will scored out of 100 (the safer you drive, the higher your score).
To activate Onlia Sense, simply let the app run in the background while you focus on your driving. The app will detect and record your trips automatically.
After each trip, you’ll be able to see your score and the details of your score. The in-app analytics will display safe driving behaviours and areas where you can improve.
The best part about the app? You can EARN REWARDS.
Currently the app is offering Starbucks digital gift cards for safe driving (I’m a sucker for Starbucks so this is an ideal perk!) But they will be adding and changing the perks over time to give drivers even more incentive to drive safely. Stay tuned!
You can earn these rewards by completing safe-driving challenges on the app such as:
- Completing 25 consecutive trips without using your phone
- Improving your monthly score by at least 10%
- Drive an entire month without using your phone
In addition to perks, the app gives you badges. You can unlock badges such as “Feather foot”, “Focused”, “Speed angel,” “Corner ace”, etc. The badges can help increase your score to earn more perks and serve as a positive reinforcement for driving safely. If you’re a competitive person like me, this has been something that has made me look forward to driving – as it’s become sort of a game.
The app uses cellular data, so this something to be aware of if you are not currently on an unlimited data plan.
So far, I’ve taken 10 successful trips with Onlia Sense and here’s what I’ve learned about my driving habits:
- I need to monitor my speed (I can admit I do go over the speed limit at times – need to be more careful!)
- I don’t abrasively increase my speed over the course of a trip (I got a perfect score in acceleration)
- I need to take it easy when I brake
Truth be told, aside from occasional speeding, I wouldn’t have known about my other driving habits if it weren’t for the Onlia Sense app. Overall, I think the app is successful in monitoring safe driving behaviours and does provide beneficial insights.
